SURVIVING
CANCER
We
all know the devastating effects of cancer and the side-effects of
cancer treatment. Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy may help
greatly in the treatment of cancer, but can devastate the body’s
immune system. This makes it more difficult for the body to handle
other ailments and reduces the quality of life. Alternative
medicine methods can be very helpful in boosting the cancer
patients’ immune system, not only to help overcome their cancer,
but also to help with some of the possible side effects from their
cancer treatment. Some factors, like genetics, are out of your
control, but there are a few common-sense things that you can do
to reduce the risk of getting cancer.
PROPER DIET
& EXERCISE
What
does diet and exercise have to do with cancer? Everything. A
healthy diet is very important for everyone and I believe that a
poor diet plays a big role in the cause of many illnesses,
including cancer. Poor diet and lack of exercise do not allow the
body’s immune system to work at maximum levels. A sedentary
lifestyle slows down and clogs the digestive system, causing poor
toxin removal. Too many toxins cause a condition referred to as
“auto-intoxication”. This means that the body is
re-circulating toxins that should have been eliminated and this
puts a strain on the body’s filter, the liver. This also dumps
toxins back into the bloodstream to be circulated throughout the
body. How can your body run at peak levels if it has to process
twice the toxins?
Eat
a healthy diet that consists of a wide variety of fruits,
vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, along
with lean meats, and fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids. The
National Cancer Institute estimates that at least 35% of all
cancers have a nutritional connection. When lifestyle factors such
as smoking and lack of exercise are included, the associated risk
becomes much higher and may be as high as 85%.
Our
diet makes a big difference in our energy levels, our mood and
even our self-esteem. When we choose foods rich in vitamins and
minerals, such as fruits and vegetables, we are also doing
something positive for our health and well-being. Diet is an often
overlooked, incredibly powerful and non-invasive way to support
your body.
Exercise
too, has several benefits. At least 30 minutes of elevated heart
rate exercise, 3 times a week stimulates and strengthens the
heart, lungs and muscles. It cleans out the blood vessels and
strengthens the diaphragm while elevating oxygen intake. Exercise
also stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is
responsible for cleansing the body of toxins and does not have a
pump (the heart) like the bloodstream does. It must rely on the
movement of the muscles to do its job. Diet and exercise work
together to clean and nourish your body and to greatly reduce the
probability of major health problems by keeping your immune system
strong. This enables you to fight off illness before it becomes a
problem.
NUTRITION
CHECKUP
If
you think that you may need a nutrition checkup, there is a new
nutrition screening process available called a nutri-physical.
This is a comprehensive analysis of your lifestyle and diet, along
with a detailed plan to help you reach your optimum health. Taking
this a step further, modern genetic science research can now
provide an individual with customized nutritional program and
lifestyle recommendations based on refined genetic profiling
through DNA analysis. It’s called Gene SNP DNA Screening
Analysis and can provide you with valuable information on the
relationship between your own unique genetic profile and potential
health challenges. It is an analysis of your genetic code from a
DNA sample you provide through a simple testing procedure.
WHAT
ABOUT HOMEOPATHY?
Homeopathy
can provide another supportive measure for cancer patients and has
been used effectively in the treatment of cancer in the past.
Before the advent of modern drugs, homeopathy was the only way to
treat cancer. Homeopathy can help in several ways. There are
specific remedies for various cancers and specialized remedies
tailored to the individual. These remedies can stimulate the
body’s natural defenses and produce profound results. Alone,
homeopathy was used to treat cancer patients for centuries before
modern cancer treatments were introduced. Homeopathic doctors from
around the world have claimed success in cancer treatment for
centuries. Whether used as a stand-alone form of treatment or in
conjunction to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, Homeopathy can
be quite effective in helping with the side effects from various
cancer treatments because homeopathy treats the individual person
as a whole, not just the disease.
Any
cancer patient should take an active role in their health. If you
are involved in your treatment, you will be more confident in its
abilities, allowing a greater chance for recovery. I encourage
every cancer patient to research all their options before making
any decisions. New, more effective treatments are being discovered
everyday. Most importantly, don’t give up. There are treatments
out there that may help you and it is up to you to find them. It
makes for a difficult recovery when a patient is so disheartened
by the diagnosis of cancer that he figuratively signs his own
death certificate when he has little hope of surviving. There is
hope. Where there is a will, there is a way.
